It is not easy to understand the difference between these two prepositions since they both mean “in” in English

The preposition DANS

Dans is more often used in reference to physical location. “Je suis dans le restaurant“. If it helps you to think of it more as “inside of,” I suppose that might work.

Therefore, dans is mostly physical “J’entre dans l’église”

It can sometimes be figurative, as in :

dans la situation actuelle
in the current situation

dans ces conditions
in / under these conditions

The preposition EN

En can also be used for some location phrases but when en is used, it is more of a reference to the person’s state or situation: “Je suis en classe”, “Je suis en France.” Etc.

En is typically more figurative than dans: “Je me spécialise en mathématiques.”
Also, en can be used as an (indirect) object pronoun.
