The preposition DANS

Dans is more often used in reference to physical location. « Je suis dans le restaurant« . If it helps you to think of it more as « inside of, » I suppose that might work.

Therefore, dans is mostly physical « J’entre dans l’église »

It can sometimes be figurative, as in :

dans la situation actuelle
in the current situation

dans ces conditions
in / under these conditions

The preposition EN

En can also be used for some location phrases but when en is used, it is more of a reference to the person’s state or situation: « Je suis en classe », « Je suis en France. » Etc.

En is typically more figurative than dans: « Je me spécialise en mathématiques. »
Also, en can be used as an (indirect) object pronoun.
