They all contain aesthetic <strong>representations of race and gender <\/strong>in contemporary France, along with key messages, like the importance of <strong>diversity, tolerance and acceptance<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 39%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The film, directed by Ladj Ly and released in 2019, is not another adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel and it\u2019s definitely not a musical. Set in Montfermeil, the same Paris suburb that inspired part of the 19th-century classic, it tells the story of this neighborhood\u2019s impoverished residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the movie scenes are taken directly from the pages of the director\u2019s own life. His family arrived in France after emigrating from Mali in the 1980s. He grew up in Montfermeil, a place now plagued by police violence, ethnic clashes and little opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this popular French movie is not a biography but a modern-day cop thriller \u2014 and it\u2019s France\u2019s entry to the Oscars. It was selected to compete for the <strong>Palme d\u2019Or<\/strong> at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the <strong>Jury Prize<\/strong>. It was selected as the French entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Award. Divines<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This film, released in 2016, narrates the story of Dounia (Oulaya Amamra), a teenage girl living in a Romani banlieue on the outskirts of Paris with her mother and aunt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She and her best friend Maimouna (D\u00e9borah Lukumuena) hustle for money, shoplifting from supermarkets and then reselling their wares on the streets to their classmates. Both girls dream of getting the hell out of their estate and making it big somewhere, anywhere, with a lot of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This film about the Paris banlieues won three <em>C\u00e9sar<\/em> awards in 2017, and the <em>Cam\u00e9ra d\u2019Or<\/em> at Cannes. Constantly forced to prove their toughness, they often must resort to violence, which reaches&nbsp;a boiling point on several occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film discusses and challenges <strong>conceptions of race, gender and class<\/strong>. Sciamma\u2019s goal was to capture the stories of black teenagers, whose characters are generally underdeveloped in French films, in her opinion. As critic Mick LaSalle pointed out, \u201cit\u2019s as if [the director] is saying, not stridently, but plainly, \u2018Here\u2019s something real people are going through that you\u2019ve never thought about.\u2019\u201d (San Francisco Chronicle, 2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The movie director&rsquo;s inspiration for the film came from the different <strong>gangs of girls<\/strong> that she saw around Paris, especially around the Les Halles shopping center and the M\u00e9tro. Her intention was to focus on <strong>friendship, sorority, and the special bond<\/strong> that is formed between girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film, also available to watch on Netflix, received highly <strong>positive reviews from critics<\/strong>. It was screened as part of the Directors\u2019 Fortnight section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Completing the <strong>realistic approach<\/strong> chosen by the film director is the exclusive use of handheld camera work. Dheepan<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dheepan<\/em> is another film that explores <strong>life in the Parisian banlieues<\/strong>. This 2015 French drama film was directed by Jacques Audiard. It narrates the story of three Tamil refugees who flee the civil war-ravaged Sri Lanka and come to France, in the hope of <strong>reconstructing their lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Audiard explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2016\/apr\/03\/jacques-audiard-interview-dheepan-prophet-rust-done-director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian (2015)<\/a>, his intention was to give migrants \u00ab\u00a0a name, a face, a shape&#8230; a violence of their own\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film won the <strong>Palme d\u2019Or<\/strong> at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It was later shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Commenting on the film, critic Jason Gorber notes that besides depicting <strong>immigrant experiences and integration<\/strong>, the film \u00ab\u00a0is polemical without being didactic, and its message about human spirit and how <strong>connections of love<\/strong> can flourish in the most astonishing of ways is <strong>extremely moving<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich
