We use these pronouns to avoid a repetition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frenchcourses-paris.com\/how-to-use-qui-and-que-in-french\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15993 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.frenchcourses-paris.com\/images\/2020\/01\/pronoun-qui-versus-que-french.jpg\" alt=\"Difference between qui and que in French\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><em>Qui<\/em> is a subject pronoun, it replaces the subject of the sentence.<\/h4>\n<p>Example: <em>Je prends le train. Le train va \u00e0 Paris.<br \/>I\u2019m taking the train. The train is going to Paris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In order to avoid repeating \u00ab le train \u00bb, you can use a relative pronoun.<\/p>\n<p>In that sentence, \u201cle train\u201d is the subject. You can therefore create one single sentence out of the two. To do this, you can use the pronoun qui.<\/p>\n<p>Example: <em>Je prends le train. Le train va \u00e0 Paris.<\/em><br \/><em>Je prends le train <u>qui\u00a0<\/u>va \u00e0 Paris.<br \/>(I\u2019m taking the train <u>which <\/u>is going\u00a0to Paris).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frenchcourses-paris.com\/fr\/how-to-use-qui-and-que-in-french\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.frenchcourses-paris.com\/images\/2020\/01\/pronoun-qui-in-french-sentence.jpg\" alt=\"How to choose between que and qui in French\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><em>Que<\/em> is a direct object pronoun, it replaces the object of the sentence<\/h4>\n<p>Example: <em>Le train va en Normandie. I\u2019m taking the train).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s use a pronoun to avoid repeating \u00ab le train \u00bb.<br \/>In the second occurrence \/ sentence, \u201cle train\u201d is the direct object. It\u2019s not the subject, it\u2019s not doing the action. The subject is \u201cje\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In order to create one single sentence, you need to use the<strong> direct object pronoun <em>que<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Le train <u>que\u00a0<\/u>je prends va en Normandie<\/em><br \/><em>(= The train that I\u2019m taking is going to Normandie).<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>How to choose between <em>que <\/em>and <em>qui <\/em>in French<\/h4>\n<p>If grammar is not your forte, <strong>here\u2019s a simple tip for you: to decide between <em>qui<\/em> and <em>que<\/em>, pay attention to the structure of the sentence<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Qui<\/em> is a subject, it will therefore be followed by the verb.<br \/><strong>QUI + VERB<\/strong><br \/>Je prends le tgv QUI VA\u00a0\u00e0 Paris.<br \/>Je regarde l\u2019homme QUI MARCHE\u00a0dans la rue.<\/p>\n<p><em>Que<\/em> is a direct object, so the sentence will also need to have a subject. The structure will be:<br \/><strong>QUE + SUBJECT + VERB<\/strong><br \/>Le tgv QUE JE PRENDS va \u00e0 Paris.<br \/>L\u2019homme QUE JE REGARDE\u00a0marche dans la rue.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure
