Grammatical difference between qui<\/em> and que<\/em><\/h4>\n

In the field of grammar, qui<\/em> and que<\/em> are named relative pronouns<\/strong>. We use these pronouns to avoid a repetition.<\/p>\n

Qui<\/em> is a subject pronoun, it replaces the subject of the sentence.<\/h4>\n

Example: Je prends le train. Le train va \u00e0 Paris.
I\u2019m taking the train. The train is going to Paris.<\/em><\/p>\n

In order to avoid repeating \u00ab le train \u00bb, you can use a relative pronoun.<\/p>\n

In that sentence, \u201cle train\u201d is the subject. You can therefore create one single sentence out of the two. To do this, you can use the pronoun qui.<\/p>\n

Example: Je prends le train. Le train va \u00e0 Paris.<\/em>
Je prends le train qui\u00a0<\/u>va \u00e0 Paris.
(I\u2019m taking the train which <\/u>is going\u00a0to Paris).<\/em><\/p>\n

Que<\/em> is a direct object pronoun, it replaces the object of the sentence<\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s use a pronoun to avoid repeating \u00ab le train \u00bb.
In the second occurrence \/ sentence, \u201cle train\u201d is the direct object. It\u2019s not the subject, it\u2019s not doing the action. The subject is \u201cje\u201d.<\/p>\n

In order to create one single sentence, you need to use the direct object pronoun que<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le train que\u00a0<\/u>je prends va en Normandie<\/em>
(= The train that I\u2019m taking is going to Normandie).<\/em><\/p>\n

How to choose between que <\/em>and qui <\/em>in French<\/h4>\n

Qui<\/em> is a subject, it will therefore be followed by the verb.
QUI + VERB<\/strong>

Je regarde l\u2019homme QUI MARCHE\u00a0dans la rue.<\/p>\n

Que<\/em> is a direct object, so the sentence will also need to have a subject. The structure will be:
QUE + SUBJECT + VERB<\/strong>
